iOS4 enables you to see how many characters you've typed in the SMS text box. Each SMS contains a maximum of 160 characters. Of course there is no problem in exceeding 160 characters, but more than one SMS would be sent - which means more money for the telecommunication operator. To find out why there are only 160 characters in an SMS, click here.
How do you enable character count in your SMS? The 2 images below are self explanatory:
Going back to the first picture on top, you would notice that there is a word "Helo" underlined in red. That's the spell checker! Another word that was underlined in red is "usin". When you tap and release on a red underlined word, spelling suggestions will pop up for you to choose. This applies to many other apps such as Notes, Email etc.
Another nice capability that comes with iOS4 is to be able to search SMSes. All you need to do is to scroll up to the very top in your SMS list screen. You may not see it at first, but when you swipe your finger down, you'll eventually find it.
With the character count feature, do you think you'll try very hard to keep your text message within one SMS or you couldn't be bothered at all?
