Before you start doing anything please note that iOS4 is only compatible with:
• iPhone 3G
• iPhone 3GS
• iPhone 4
• iPod touch 2nd generation
• iPod touch 3rd generation (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB)
Here are the steps that I took to update my iPhone 3GS to iOS4:
- Launch iTunes on PC
- Update iTunes to the latest version (9.2)
- Restart PC after iTunes installation completed
- Connect iPhone to PC via the USB
- If there is a prompt to ask you to upgrade to iOS4, click OK. If not, click on Devices>iPhone on the sidebar of your iTunes and then click on [Check For Update] button.
- The iOS4 download will take about 1-2 hours depending on your connection speed. Mine took about 90 mins. At this point of time, you can plug out your iPhone if you want to.
- Once download is completed plug in your iPhone again (if you plugged out earlier) and follow the instructions shown.
- While the installation is taking place you will notice that your iPhone screen show an Apple logo with a progress bar at the bottom.
- When the installation is completed and the iPhone is fully booted, it will request for your PIN to unlock the phone and then the SIM, if you enable those security features. Otherwise you might just see the new iOS4 immediately.
- Congratulations! iOS4 is now in session! It's safe to plug it out now.
Have fun with it!
