New feature in iOS4 - photo app changes

If you are using iPhoto or Aperture for your pics and have tagged faces, places or events on them, you will see this bar (above) in your iPhone photo app once you sync those pics. The iOS4 on its own is not capable of tagging events and faces, although if you turn on the Location Services, it can tag places for you.

So for example, if you click on Places, you can see photos that have been taken at different locations pinned on a Google map. To see more specific locations, just double tap on the map to zoom in. If you tap once on the red pin, you will see a thumbnail with a total number of photo collection taken in that location. Clicking on the blue arrow will bring you to a gallery of that collection.

When you choose to email a picture from your photo app gallery, it now has option to resize your image before emailing. So, go ahead and choose the best size for you.

New feature in iOS4 - more voice control commands

iOS4 adds several new voice control commands to the existing voice control capability. If you're not sure how to activate the voice control capability, it's really simple:
  1. Hold iPhone home button or headset middle button for about 2 seconds
  2. When the blue voice control screen pops up you can speak out your desired command (some choices can be seen floating by the blue screen)

Did you manage to uncover any voice control commands not listed in the cheat sheet?

New feature in iOS4 - selective location services

The iOS4 allows you to turn on Location Services only for specific apps. You will be able to individually turn them ON/OFF as shown above by accessing [Settings] > [General] > [Location Services]. With multitasking, this is especially important because you may not want to turn on Location Services for every app to conserve battery life. Turn on Location Services only for the apps that you really need its geo-location functionalities.

Do you have a lot of apps that require location services?

New feature in iOS4 - digital zoom and tap to focus video

Your iPhone camera can now zoom digitally with iOS4. Of course for those who couldn't wait for this upgrade would've gotten themselves a camera app with zoom. Anyway, here's how you do it on iOS4 using the default camera app:

   1. Launch the Apple's default camera app
   2. Tap on the area on the picture that you wish to focus
   3. The zoom slider will appear almost the same time as the focus cross-hair box (light blue)
   4. Slide to zoom

Here are some sample shots taken with full zoom and without:

From the above comparison, the zoom works quite ok for flat text but not so well for 3D objects. It's probably optimized to work with the upcoming iPhone 4.0 5MP camera with LED flash. I did notice an improvement in speed when taking photos.

Another new camera feature allows you to just tap on anywhere to focus the camera during video recording mode.

Do you find this digital zoom feature by Apple to be better than other third-party camera app?

How to CAPS LOCK on iPhone

You may be wondering what's that highlighted blue arrow-up on the keyboard? Why is yours not blue? Is it some nice cosmetic?

It's blue because CAPS LOCK is turned on. Didn't know iPhone can do CAPS LOCK? It's easy. Just double tap on the arrow-up button to make it CAPS LOCK - useful when YOU FEEL LIKE SCREAMING YOUR HEART OUT LOUD!

Before that you'll need to enable CAPS LOCK feature (it's off by default).

Go to [Settings] > [General] > [Keyboard] > [Enable Caps Lock] > ON

Glad you found out about this?

New feature in iOS4 - new SMS capabilities

iOS4 enables you to see how many characters you've typed in the SMS text box. Each SMS contains a maximum of 160 characters. Of course there is no problem in exceeding 160 characters, but more than one SMS would be sent - which means more money for the telecommunication operator. To find out why there are only 160 characters in an SMS, click here.

How do you enable character count in your SMS? The 2 images below are self explanatory:

Going back to the first picture on top, you would notice that there is a word "Helo" underlined in red. That's the spell checker! Another word that was underlined in red is "usin". When you tap and release on a red underlined word, spelling suggestions will pop up for you to choose. This applies to many other apps such as Notes, Email etc.

Another nice capability that comes with iOS4 is to be able to search SMSes. All you need to do is to scroll up to the very top in your SMS list screen. You may not see it at first, but when you swipe your finger down, you'll eventually find it.

With the character count feature, do you think you'll try very hard to keep your text message within one SMS or you couldn't be bothered at all?

New feature in iOS4 - complex passcode

Feeling a bit insecure about your 4-digit passcode lock for your iPhone? Too easy to guess? Fear not! The iOS4 has a new feature to make your passcode more complex. The downside to this is that you'll need to really remember your complex passcode!

If you're up to the challenge,

   1. Tap on the [Settings] icon
   2. Then select [General] > [Passcode Lock]
   3. Enter your current passcode if it's enabled
   4. At the Passcode Lock screen, slide the [Simple Passcode] from ON to OFF
   5. You'll be asked to key in your old passcode again, so just do it.
   6. After that you will be asked to key in your new complex passcode. Notice the change in keyboard.

   7. Key in your new complex passcode twice and you're done! In this case I keyed in "hello".

Do you feel more secure with this complex passcode feature?

New feature in iOS4 - setting lock and home screen wallpapers

It's time to spice up the look of your iPhone home screen with changeable wallpapers! You can set separate wallpapers for your Lock Screen and Home Screen. Here's one of the few ways to do it:

   1. Tap on the [Settings] icon
   2. Select [Wallpaper >], which will bring you to this screen

   3. This screen will show you the current wallpaper for both Lock (left) and Home (right) Screen. Tap on it.
   4. Go through your picture gallery and select the image which you would like to set as wallpaper.
   5. Decide whether you want to set it on the Lock Screen, Home Screen or both.

And there you have it - a brand new look for your Home Screen!

Do you find yourself changing the wallpapers frequently?

New feature in iOS4 - iBooks

This is the first book on my iBooks shelf:

Surprise! It's Winnie the Pooh! Oh well, I'm not a fan, but I downloaded it because it's the top free book. Anyway, it sure looks like it's sitting nicely on the shelf. Notice the word "New" on the book? That's how iBooks marks a newly downloaded book.

This app is really cool. It's definitely better than many of the previous book apps that I've seen. So let's take a peek inside:

Ok, there's Pooh and Eeyore

I find that Apple has given a real good thought about the whole design. The bookshelf looks really good with books sitting on it. It's virtually realistic. Right from the moment you choose the book from the iBooks shelf, it jumps out at you and opens up like a real book. The inside of the book really has a nice paper feel to it, including the page turning effect. Of course, it's more than just a book. It's a book that suits itself to you - the reader.

You can easily bookmark any page that you fancy by just taping on the ribbon symbol on the top right corner. When it's bookmarked, it becomes a prominent red ribbon. There's also a slider at the bottom if you prefer to glide through the pages quickly. On the bottom right corner, lies a little motivation for you - there's an indicator that tells you how many pages left before the end of a chapter.

Just like a real book you can highlight selected text. There are five colours to choose from - yellow, green, blue, pink and purple. Even the highlighting effect looks so real that it would seem as if you took a pen highlighter to do it. Besides that, you could also choose to lookup a word in the dictionary, add a note or search other parts of the book for the selected word. All this can be done by holding down on a specific word and then release it, just like how you would do it for copy and paste. When I selected dictionary, it says that there is no dictionary available for this language. I suspect that I would need to purchase a dictionary to make this function useful.

If you add a note to a certain passage, the passage would be highlighted and there would be a piece of note stuck at the edge of the page to signify it:

An overview of all your bookmarks, notes and highlights can be accessed through the triple horizontal line icon at the top of the page, which will lead you to the view shown here:

If you fancy a book that has Times New Roman font rather than Palatino font or a slight larger font size for easy reading, just tap on the double A on top of the page. You can also change the colour of the paper to be have a more nostalgic feel by turning on the sepia effect.

You also get to adjust the brightness of the page to your comfort by clicking on the sun symbol. This is important especially when we are reading off a LCD screen instead of a real paper. This would also mean you can read easily in most lighting conditions.

All in all, I find this app to be interesting and fun to use. I've not read through a whole book with it yet, but it's sure very inviting! So go ahead and download your iBooks app today!

The books that you purchased can be synced to iPad and iPod touch as well. This includes all your bookmarks, notes and current page. That means, you only need to purchase a book once and you can read it on multiple devices, picking up from exactly where you left off.

A note of caution - since the books are purchased and downloaded via the iBooks app itself, you might want to keep an eye on your telco data usage if you are not running on WiFi. Otherwise you might land yourself a hefty bill.

Do you think you will enjoy reading books on iPhone/iPad/iPod touch more than on print?

New feature in iOS4 - where is my iBooks?

You've probably heard that the iBooks app will be made available on iPhones with iOS4. You're all excited about it, maybe because you can finally read Winnie the Pooh on the iPhone. After installing the iOS4, you start to search frantically for the iBooks app but it's no where to be found!

So, where did the iBooks go?

New feature in iOS4 - multitasking!

This is perhaps the biggest leap in the iPhone OS - multitasking. Now you can run your favorite third-party apps and switch between them instantly. You can do that by:

  1. Pressing the home button to switch away from the current app to the home screen.
  2. On the home screen, select the next app to launch.
  3. Double click the home button to show a list of apps that are running concurrently.
  4. From that list you can go back and forth between many apps that are already running.
The list of concurrently running apps are shown at the bottom bar

To kill off any app from the multitasking list:
  1. Hold you finger on the apps icon in the multitasking bar until they start to wiggle.
  2. You can swipe left and right (if you have more than 4 apps running concurrently) to look for the app that you wish to terminate.
  3. Tap on the red-coloured "no entry sign" badge on the top left of the wiggling icon to close the app.
  4. Press the home button once when you are finished.
The red-coloured "no-entry sign" badge located at the top-left of the icon.

There are many apps that have not been upgraded to support multitasking. You'll need to wait awhile before the app developers implement this feature in their apps. So for now, although some apps are in the multitasking bar, you may notice them restarting each time you call on them from the multitasking bar.

At the moment I did not notice any unusual drain on my battery life nor sluggish performance of my iPhone, possibly because many apps that I have do not support multitasking yet. I shall find out in time to come...

How many apps can you multi-task before your iPhone performance starts to be sluggish?

New feature in iOS4 - folders!

My 11 pages of apps in iPhone have been compressed to just 3 pages thanks to the new folder capabilities in iOS4. This feature is tremendously helpful in organizing the iPhone apps. They come in icon-sized boxes that contain mini-sized apps icons within them.

Using this feature is really simple:

  1. Hold your finger on any icon until all the icons start to wiggle
  2. Drag and drop an icon that you wish to put into a folder on top of another icon which you want to put into that same folder
  3. The moment you dropped the first icon, the folder will be automatically created. The name of the folder is according to the category of the app, but you can easily change it
  4. Once the folder is created you can drag and drop more apps into it up to a max of 12 apps.
  5. Press the home button once when you are with organizing your apps
  6. You can easily access the contents of the folder by tapping on it once and select the app that you wish to launch

Similarly on iTunes (version 9.2 onwards), you could also manage your folder under the Devices > iPhone > Apps tab. Just drag and drop apps on top of each other to form a folder.

With folders, you could probably store up to a whopping 2016 apps on your iPhone!

Do you think that Apple has done a good job on the user interface of the folder feature?

Pictures stored in iPhone are blur or out-of-focus after upgrading to iOS4

At first, I thought something was wrong with my eyes. The pictures that I saved in my iPhone 3GS have become blurry. No, there's nothing wrong with my eyes.

This is how the picture looked like on my iPhone before iOS4 upgrade:

This is how the picture looked like on my iPhone after iOS4 upgrade:

As you can see for yourself, the resolution of the pictures have been severely degraded. One observation is that this is true for the images that are not saved in the Camera Roll folder. Pictures in the Camera Roll folder remained the same. As far as I could tell, although I did have the pictures degraded, I did not lose any picture.

If you are facing the same problem, don't worry! All you need to do is to plug in your iPhone into the PC again and sync it with iTunes. You will see the progress bar on the iTunes saying "Optimizing photos... for iPhone".

I cannot explain why my earlier sync did not perform this optimization but right now it just did. So, if you've sync it earlier on, you should try to sync again if you are facing this problem.

Did you face this problem? How many times do you need to re-sync your iPhone with iTunes before you resolve it?

Missing calendars after upgrading iOS4

I noticed that some of my calendars was missing after I loaded the new iOS4 into my iPhone 3GS. What I did to recover it was:
  1. Go to [Settings]
  2. Select [Mail, Contacts, Calendars]
  3. Select the Account(s) that has missing calendars
  4. Turn OFF the calendars
  5. Press the [Delete from My iPhone] button
  6. Turn ON the calendars again
Turning your calendars OFF and ON again will help to refresh your missing iPhone calendar! Wait for awhile after that for your events to be populated again... I waited for 3-4 hours!!!

However, after looking at this thread from Google support forum, it may be due to Google's mobile server being overloaded with many people trying to sync their Google accounts in such a short period of time after the iOS4 upgrade.

So which is which? Apple's iOS4 or Google's server problem?

How To Update Your iPhone to iOS4

Before you start doing anything please note that iOS4 is only compatible with:

• iPhone 3G
• iPhone 3GS
• iPhone 4
• iPod touch 2nd generation
• iPod touch 3rd generation (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB)

Here are the steps that I took to update my iPhone 3GS to iOS4:
  1. Launch iTunes on PC
  2. Update iTunes to the latest version (9.2)
  3. Restart PC after iTunes installation completed
  4. Connect iPhone to PC via the USB
  5. If there is a prompt to ask you to upgrade to iOS4, click OK. If not, click on Devices>iPhone on the sidebar of your iTunes and then click on [Check For Update] button.
  6. The iOS4 download will take about 1-2 hours depending on your connection speed. Mine took about 90 mins. At this point of time, you can plug out your iPhone if you want to.
  7. Once download is completed plug in your iPhone again (if you plugged out earlier) and follow the instructions shown.
  8. While the installation is taking place you will notice that your iPhone screen show an Apple logo with a progress bar at the bottom.
  9. When the installation is completed and the iPhone is fully booted, it will request for your PIN to unlock the phone and then the SIM, if you enable those security features. Otherwise you might just see the new iOS4 immediately.
  10. Congratulations! iOS4 is now in session! It's safe to plug it out now.
Have fun with it!
